I watched Marcia Clark’s Season 1 Episode 5 on the death at the Spreckles Mansion last night- from her show “The First 48.” I had listened to the podcast, but not seen the episode. I learned a few things, which I am sure you covered in your second Zahau book, but in any regard, I wanted to let you know what they are. I thought it was very well done, maybe even better than the Oxygen presentation.
She had a long clip of Dina Shacknai crying telling Marcia what a smiling happy boy Max was. But there was only a very small clip, later, almost as if it had been clipped of Dina telling Marcia she didn’t think Rebecca committed suicide. She repeated Jonah’s comment about Rebecca’s death being “Asian honor.” I’m wondering if she initially may have thought Jonah had something to do with it, but she was cut off from expanding on that statement.
Then Marty Rudoy, an attorney hired by the Zahau family during the initial investigation into her death, said he believed the “hanging” was done backwards. That the rope was measured for length, and that she never went over the balcony but was hoisted up from the ground. That was one of the reasons the bed barely moved. I had thought that myself. He said her dirty feet were too dirty for it to have been from the dusty balcony, and that she was likely in the garden at some point. Also that Adam wouldn’t have stood on a three legged table to cut her down, it wouldn’t have held him. If she could be hoisted from the ground up, she could also be lowered from the top down couldn’t she? He would need to measure the length of rope to get it just right, and I agree with that.
Dr. Wecht, after having her body exhumed and performing a second autopsy found four subscalpular hemorrhages, high up on her head. Of course the Sheriff’s department (Gore) believes she suffered those from swinging into the underside of the balcony. I do not.
And last, which was very shocking, Mary asked to speak to Adam after learning of Rebecca’s death. She asked him what happened. He told her “I don’t want to push someone else over the edge”, stating he didn’t want to go into what happened. I don’t take that literally, and I’m still considering what he may have meant by that, but my initial thought is that there could have been someone else involved. Someone he didn’t want to have “go over the edge” mentally along with Rebecca and Max. Or, that the death of Rebecca mimics the death of Max – one over the edge of a banister, the other over the edge of a balcony. But who else would be left to go over the edge that by recounting his tale, would have pushed them?
Also I read that Caitlin Rother, true crime writer, is planning on writing a book about this case to be released 2021.
